Car through the lake on April 7th

The last post mentioned the Rotary Club of Buffalo had a contest to see who came the closest to guessing the time the car would fall through the lake. It was at 4:02pm on April 7th.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve added something new here. I wouldn’t say there’s a lot new going on, but a couple things.

The house is a mess, with wallpaper torn off the walls, primer and paint going up, ladders and tools all around, and dust everywhere. All this work is for the graduation party for Holly coming up in June. I hope we get everything done on time.

I sharpened the lawnmower blades and adjusted the transmission recently, and Mitch was out mowing last night. It seemed to work OK, but the mower needs a little more TLC.

I’ve been running 5K nearly every day for the past week. I took yesterday off due to a sore knee. You can track my workout progress by clicking HERE. There’s an app for my new phone that tracks my distance other info and then posts it to their website.

Yep, I got a new phone due to recent increased usage that made the Pay-Per-Minute Tracfone not as thrifty as it used to be. I’m not on a yearly contract, but another month-month plan through Virgin Mobile. It’s still a pretty good deal, but the phone is a lot cooler. The LG Optimus V phone replaces the Palm T|X I used to have (sold on eBay to buy the new phone), and does a whole lot more. The phone is an Android (Google – yuk) and has a lot of useful apps. But, I don’t like the idea of Google knowing where I am all the time, what barcodes I’m scanning to check prices, what I text to people and just the whole tracking thing in general.

I started reading through The Bible in a year (an app for the phone) and am almost 6% through it so far. Yes, that’s not very far, but it’s making me consistent – something that I had a hard time doing in the past.

Thanks to the people who have donated to the Be The Match fundraiser 5K run for bone marrow transplants. If you haven’t donated, there’s still time. If you can’t donate, how about signing up to be a donor?

Ice Out 4/10/2011

Predicting ice out on Lake Minnetonka each year is an annual event. I was wondering when the ice would be out on our lake. Well, it was yesterday. It was just a couple days ago that the entire lake was still covered with ice. It’s been pretty warm and windy the last few days, which helped melt the ice very quickly.

The Rotary Club in Buffalo puts a vehicle on the ice and people guess when it will fall through. Here’s the article from the local paper:

Buffalo Rotary Vehicle Takes the Plunge Many people have been waiting and watching, and recently even marveling at how the Buffalo Rotary’s ice plunge vehicle was able to stay atop the ice on Buffalo Lake. The specially stripped-down SUV was placed on the ice earlier this winter, and chances were sold to guess to the nearest minute the date and time that the vehicle would finally go through the ice.In 2010, the vehicle crashed through the ice on March 26th, but this year, the vehicle hung on until 4:02 PM on Thursday, April 7th.The closest guess was by Gwen Wilson of Buffalo, who guessed 3:51 PM on April 7th, just 11 minutes earlier than the actual time the vehicle disappeared.Gwen wins 1000 dollars for her winning guess. The Buffalo Rotary will use the funds raised for various projects throughout the community.

That’s all for now.

Be The One Run

Over 10 years ago, I signed up with the Be The Match Foundation (as a bone marrow donor). There is a fundraiser in May that you can help out with. I’m running in a 5K race around Lake Harriet in Minneapolis on May 21st at 9am. You can donate HERE. If you want to watch an old chubby guy run just over 3 miles, come out and watch. You can register to run too – we can make a team. Or if you can’t donate or run, you can always register as a donor.

Did I mention that you can help me out and donate? HERE is the link.  At that link, click where it says “Make a gift!” under the thermometer.

Not quite a new job

I no longer work for Qwest. CenturyLink bought Qwest. Though it’s official as of April 1, we still answer the phone as Qwest for now. In August there will be some sort of marketing thing when we start calling ourselves CenturyLink.
